Essentially everyone finds herself at a critical crossroads more than once in her career. Undergraduates may experience a confidence crisis getting through difficult classes or applying for REUs or finding a job. Graduate students may struggle passing qualifying exams, or not know how to find an advisor, or not have a good understanding of how to apply for a job. The stronger professional network women have, the more likely they are to successfully navigate these critical junctures and stay in the field.
Unfortunately, many women may not be aware of the importance of these networks and may have an aversion to nurturing them, feeling they should be able to succeed in mathematics without ’special support.’ Paradoxically, it is precisely when these networks are not needed that they need to be nurtured, so they are already in place and can be utilized at times of crisis. For this reason, a vitally important role of our group is to provide opportunities by which it is both easy and attractive for the women in the department to get to know each other on both a personal and professional level.
