ANTH 470 (10639): Multidisciplinary Seminar in Visual Anthropology

Spring 2025
ByJennifer Cool

ANTH 470 is a course in applying media— text, photography, sound recording, video, drawing, animation—in ethnographic research and representation.

Students approach media as:

1) Research methods for the production of anthropological knowledge;

2) Texts that aim to communicate across particular social contexts.

Hands-on explorations are contextualized through the history, theory, and practice of ethnographic media.

Students consider the role of media making alongside questions of ethics and representation in contemporary scholarly practice.

Students may build on research they have already done or develop new projects that they research and produce over the semester.
