Karen Rowan-Badger

Associate Dean, USC Dornsife Admission and Student Services

Major/Minor: General Studies/Education (Humanities emphasis)

Why I love USC Dornsife: We were the first. The original. When USC began in 1880, we were there. The core of USC is the College of Letters, Arts & Sciences, and we are proud of our legacy.

Helpful hints for applicants: Think of your application as an introduction to who you are and who you want to become. Answer the questions fully; it’s easy to spot an application thrown together at the last minute.

Laura Apisakkul

Executive Director

Major/Minor: Social Science (Psychology emphasis); Chemistry minor

Why I love USC Dornsife: Our students are active, involved, altruistic, and passionate. They creatively apply what they’ve learned in the classroom toward research, internships, study abroad, and community service so that they can make a difference and help others. I am always left in awe hearing about all they accomplish here.

Helpful hints for applicants: Your major doesn’t have to perfectly align with a particular career path. Select a major in an area that you truly want to learn more about, rather than the major that you think you’re “supposed” to select. You may even enter a career field that is yet to be created. The beauty of a liberal arts and sciences degree is in its flexibility.

Mark Kveton

Director

Major/Minor: Psychology and Social Behavior

Why I love USC Dornsife: USC Dornsife’s students are simply the best. I love how ambitious and driven they are. With so many majors and opportunities available, every student can find a way to fuel their passions, regardless of what they want to do while they’re here.

Helpful hints for applicants: Don’t overthink it! There is no one right way or perfect answer to any part of the application. This is your opportunity to help us to get to know you and your experiences. Be yourself and let your personality shine through!

Libni Lopez

Senior Assistant Director

Major/Minor: History; Psychology and Social Behavior minor

Why I love USC Dornsife: Our students are extremely involved. Dornsife students take advantage of the many opportunities and resources available to further explore the intersections between their academics, interests, and passions.

Helpful hints for applicants: Essays are great opportunities to highlight different aspects of yourself. Use your authentic voice; share who you are in and out of the classroom and how USC and Dornsife fit into your goals and aspirations. Finally, start your essays early and be sure to answer the “how” and “why!”

Stacey Badger

Senior Assistant Director

Major/Minor: Psychology; Cultural Anthropology minor

Why I love USC Dornsife: Dornsife students have the ability to find and explore their passions. There are so many opportunities for students to try things have never done before throughout campus, as well as abroad, while also having the ability to dive deeper into projects and ideas they already care about. Dornsife has a way of simultaneously expanding the world, while also making it incredibly accessible.

Helpful hints for applicants: Be you, and not who you think you we want you to be. It is more than alright to have interests and involvements both inside and outside of the major you are applying for, and we want to read all about it! The more honest and authentic you are in your application, the better your application will be, and the more we can learn about you.

Rachel Sanchez

Assistant Director

Major/Minor: Sociology; Education and Society minor

Why I love USC Dornsife: USC Dornsife is a one-of-a-kind environment that encourages student collaboration and prioritizes academic exploration! It is a safe place for students to discover their passions, deepen their knowledge, and meaningfully engage with the world around them.

Helpful hints for applicants: Trust yourself! No one knows you like you know yourself, so really focus on making sure that your personality and unique perspective shine through in your application. Try to take time to read your essays aloud to yourself when alone. If you can hear your voice in the essays, then your admission counselors will too!

Aaron Smith

Assistant Director

Major/Minor: Environmental Studies; International Relations minor

Why I love USC Dornsife: What I love about USC Dornsife is our students. Our students are truly remarkable, they all tailor their education to their personal goals and passions whether that be through their minors, research endeavors, or the organizations they join on campus. It’s always amazing to see how our students utilize the many resources and opportunities available to them and find unique ways to learn and grow through Dornsife.

Helpful hints for applicants: Just be yourself! The application is your chance to show off who you are: what shapes you and what drives you as an individual. Take some time to reflect, fully answer each question, read your essays out loud, and let your authentic voice shine through.

Nikki Howell

Assistant Director

Major/Minor: Political Science; Legal Studies minor

Why I love USC Dornsife: Dornsife provides a dynamic environment where students are encouraged and empowered to take advantage of all the opportunities our university offers. The abundance of resources available to students ensures a robust support system throughout their higher education journey. I especially love the interdisciplinary freedom that allows students to become interconnected with their passions and their individual programs of study allowing them to tailor their time at USC to best support their areas of interest.

Helpful hints for applicants: Be your most authentic self! Our team loves to learn about not only who you are, but who you aspire to become. Don’t hesitate to share your interests and passions, even if they don’t perfectly align with your major; this only enhances your candidacy and showcases your diverse strengths!
