LA’s shade gap: Many think their streets are covered – they’re not
Nearly half of Angelenos say their block has enough shade even though most live on tree-sparse streets. A new LABarometer report also reveals how race, politics and education shape support for greening the city.
Key findings:
- Nearly half of Los Angeles County residents believe their block has enough shade — even though most live on streets with little to no tree cover.
- Many residents support their city spending money to plant and maintain trees in neighborhoods with little shade, but support varies across demographics and is lowest among Black Angelenos, who are least likely to live in well-shaded neighborhoods.
- Bus riders have little relief from the sun: Only a quarter of Angelenos say their neighborhood stop has enough shade.
