New Moon: FOR SALE

ByFiona Liu

I saw a wanderess selling moon across the street

Inside her cup, a rich alchemy churned
Like sparkling soda, or steaming bone broth
I had no pennies, and asked for a goblet of clear water instead

A slice of crescent moon fluttered within.

Some wrapped their luna in a takeout box, some gulped
And a few held the glasses, pouring moon into

the sea

Two or three of them, shadows flickering

Customers visited and left with palms of moon

The bleached railway they’ve melted into stretched into the distance.

Then, on one airless evening
when all the waters carried a piece of moon

bubbling, steaming, and mine,

missing

Fugitives came over and fled from craters of

Solitude: like hair in my bathtub, knotted, for sale.
