Cyclical

ByGarrett Goodrum

“This piece explores the duality of creation and destruction. Depending on context, these two actions can be one in the same. In carving a wooden figure, one simultaneously breaks down the wood and creates something new. My artwork exists in a constant state of destruction and creation. In the making of the piece, I made plaster casts which I then broke into many shards and attached to a cardboard structure. The plaster surface becomes a place of both fragmentation and accumulation. Similarly, the cardboard structure itself is three concentric circles, but these circles are incomplete, forever in a state of being finished or erased. In this way, the viewer must ask whether this piece is being built up or broken down.”
