While Valentine’s Day marks today’s symbolic commemoration of romance, passion and love, countless works of art — novels, paintings, poems and more — throughout the ages have attempted to capture the complexity and meaning of this deeply human condition with much greater nuance.

USC Dornsife scholars Kate Flint of art history and English, David St. John of English and comparative literature, and former Poet Laureate of California Carol Muske-Dukes of English share their favorite love-inspired paintings, books and poems, respectively.

Kate Flint, Provost Professor of Art History and English, presents five Victorian paintings that break tradition in their celebration of love.

David St. John, University Professor and professor of English and comparative literature, presents his five favorite love stories.

Carol Muske-Dukes, professor of English presents five of her favorite love poems.

And for a look at romance in the modern age, Lecturer Julie Albright of psychology gives her take on looking for love in the internet age.
