USC Latino Forum Faculty Hall of Fame – April 2011

 

Oliver Mayer, Associate Professor of Theater, recently debuted his play, FILO AL FUEGO (the Miami-Spanish version of BLADE TO THE HEAT) at the Teatro Prometeo. That production will be coming to Los Angeles in 2011.

George Sanchez, Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity and History and Vice Dean for Diversity and Strategic Initiatives, received the 2010 Outstanding Latino/a Faculty in Higher Education (Research Institutions) Award, from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education. Prof. Sanchez is currently the highest ranking Latino in the USC administration.

Consuelo Siguenza-Ortiz, a Lecturer in the College, received the USC Latina/o Student Assembly Faculty/Staff Recognition Award, 2008-2009

Macarena Gomez Barris, Associate Professor of Sociology and American Studies and Ethnicity, was awarded a USC Mellon Graduate Student Mentorship Award (2009-10)

Macarena Gomez Barris, Associate Professor of Sociology and American Studies and Ethnicity, received a grant from the Center for Religion and Civic Culture for her research on Religious Tourism (2010-11).

Macarena Gomez Barris, Associate Professor of Sociology and American Studies and Ethnicity, was recently appointed Interim Chair of American Studies and Ethnicity (2011-12).

Estela Bensimon, Professor of Higher Education and Co-Director of the Center for Urban Education at the USC Rossier School of Education, received the 2010 Outstanding Women of Color in Education Award.

Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo, Professor of Sociology, received the 2009 ¡Adelante!  Award, from ¡Adelante! California, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in communities throughout the state and nurturing youth through educational programs that promote advocacy.

Maria-Elena Martinez, Associate Professor of History and American Studies and Ethnicity, received the American Historical Association’s James A. Rawley Prize in Atlantic History, and the AHA’s Conference on Latin American History’s Mexican History Prize, for her book, Genealogical Fictions: Limpieza de Sangre, Religion, and Gender in Colonial Mexico (Stanford University Press, 2008).

Steve Lopez, Professor of Psychology, received the 2008 California Psychological Association Distinguished Scientific Achievement in Psychology Award

Felix Gutierrez, Professor of Journalism and American Studies and Ethnicity, was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award (2007) from The National Association of Minority Media Executives for being “a pioneer in advancing diversity in journalism education, employment and coverage.”

Tatiana Melguizo, Assistant Professor of Education, won the 2008 Donald E. Gratzke Outstanding Dissertation Award from the American Association of University Administrators.

Manuel Pastor, Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity and Co-Director of USC’s Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration (CSII), received a grant from Atlantic Philanthropies for “Bridging Progressive Research, Policy and Organizing,” (2011-2013)

Veronica Terriquez, Assistant Professor of Sociology, received a grant from the Irvine Foundation for “Linked Learning and the Educational, Labor Market, and Civic Trajectories of Young Adults” (2010-11).
