John Rechy, a novelist and the author of several plays and works of nonfiction, is the recipient of PEN-USA’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the William Whitehead Award for Lifetime Achievement, and an NEA Fellowship. His first novel, City of Night, an international best-seller, was named one of the Publishing Triangle’s twenty-five all-time “best novels.” The Sexual Outlaw: A Documentary was included by the San Francisco Chronicle Book Review among the 100 most important nonfiction books of the twentieth century. Rechy’s books have been translated into more than twenty languages and he has written for The Nation, the Los Angeles Times, and the New York Times Book Review.
