Carol Tavris is a social psychologist, writer, and lecturer. She is coauthor, with Elliot Aronson, of Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me) [3rd ed., 2020], on the psychology of self-justification—why people stay on a path or hold on to a belief long past its expiration date. She is also coauthor, with Avrum Bluming, of Estrogen Matters, a critical assumption of another expired belief, that postmenopausal estrogen is carcinogenic. Her most popular earlier books include Anger: The misunderstood emotion and The Mismeasure of Woman. Carol has written hundreds of articles, op-eds, and book reviews for the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, TLS, Wall Street Journal, Chronicle of Higher Education, Skeptic magazine, and many others. A Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, she has received numerous awards for her efforts to promote science and skepticism, including an award from the Center for Inquiry’s Independent Investigations Group; an honorary doctorate from Simmons College for her work in promoting critical thinking and gender equity; the Bertrand Russell Distinguished Scholar, Foundation for Critical Thinking, Sonoma State; and the Media Achievement Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology.
