Location
Embracing 136 Schools covering all branches of science, the Ettore Majorana International Centre for Scientific Culture is situated in the old pre-medieval city of Erice where four restored monasteries provide an appropriate setting. These monasteries are now named after great scientists and strong Centre supporters.
The San Rocco Monastery (now the Isidor I. Rabi Institute) houses the Directorate and the main Secretariat of the Centre and the “Richard P. Feynman” Lecture Hall.
The San Domenico Monastery (Patrick M.S. Blackett Institute) contains the ‘Paul A.M. Dirac’ Lecture Hall, the ‘Robert Hofstadter’ Lecture Hall and the ‘John von Neumann’ Lecture Hall.
The San Francesco Monastery (Eugene P. Wigner Institute) contains the “Enrico Fermi” Lecture Hall.
The ‘Ciclope’ is now the Victor F. Weisskopf Institute with the ‘John S. Bell’ and ‘Richard H. Dalitz’ Lecture Halls.
There are living quarters in all four Institutes for people attending the Courses of the Centre.
The arrival day is May 21 and the departure day is May 27, 2025.
Erice is about 90 km (one and a half hours’ drive) from the Palermo Airport.
A limousine or a bus of the Ettore Majorana Centre (EMCSC) will be available to pick you up from the Palermo Airport, the Trapani Airport, or the Trapani railway station, provided you have properly filled and returned the Travel Form no later than May 3. On your arrival at the airport or railway station, look for the driver of the EMCSC who will be waiting for you and will transport you to Erice. The driver will be holding a poster of the Majorana Centre.
[Missing driver. In case the driver is not there within half an hour after your exit from the arrival area, you should call the Secretariat of the EMCSC, phone no.: +39-0923-869133, for instructions. (Phone cards may be purchased at the news stand.) NB: the cost of a trip to Erice by taxi is rather expensive and may not be reimbursed by the organizers unless the trip has been authorized by the EMCSC.]
Note: No pick-up is available from the railway station, bus station, or port at Palermo. Participants arriving at these terminals are requested to reach the Palermo airport by shuttle bus and to indicate in the Travel Form the approximate time of arrival at the airport where they will be met by the Centre.
Participants planning to rent their own car at the airport are advised to book one early in view of the tourist season.
Visa. If you need a visa to travel to Italy and/or an official invitation letter, please contact the organizers. The Centre can assist with invitations, but be careful to apply for visas in advance as you may encounter long processing times at Italian embassies and consulates.
Check-in. On your arrival at the reception desk you will fill out the registration form, receive your room, your folder and your EMCSC badge. The reception desk is located at the EMCSC main building (San Rocco).
After registration you should carefully read: (1) the material in the folder concerning the regulations of the EMCSC, meals, the location of restaurants associated with EMCSC, etc.; (2) the specific information about your course posted in the entrance hall of San Rocco (location and starting time of lectures, program, social events, etc.).
Also, please see the note about the arrival day get-together on the Accommodation page.
