Extracurricular Activity and Child Early Learning and Development (EXCEL) Study
The goal of the USC Extracurricular Activity and Child Early Learning and Development (EXCEL) Study is to learn more about child brain development and extracurricular activities. Children who participate in this study will be randomly assigned (like a lottery) to participate in a free after-school program for 2 years. The program will either be an after-school music or general enrichment program. Both programs will be free of charge and will provide 5-7 hours of weekly after-school activities. Your child will be invited to 3 visits to USC to complete assessments that help measure their cognitive development and take a brain picture using MRI: one visit before the start of the after-school program, one visit 1-yr after the start of the program and the last visit at the end of the program.
Who can participate?
Children who:
- are ages 6-8 years old
- live in Los Angeles
- identify as Latino/a or Hispanic
