ANTH 220g Anthropology of the Environment

ByLuísa Reis-Castro

As climate change prompts planetary transformations, there is a pressing need to comprehend the intricate relationship between humans and the environment. But why is it important to explore the historical impacts of colonialism and racism to better understand our current situation? And how can we develop more equitable solutions to address the many contemporary challenges?

Throughout this course, we will examine the politics, practices, and technologies shaping human interactions with the environment. Topics will range from the discussion about terms such as “development” or “sustainability, to the history of National Parks, and the science behind antimicrobial resistance.

But it is not just theory. We will engage in practical, hands-on activities to learn and apply research methods to real environmental issues. By the end of this course, students will gain the analytical tools needed to critically reflect on – and transform – our shared environmental future.
