Prof. Hanna Reisler

Professor of Chemistry, reisler@usc.edu
Ph.D., 1972, Weizmann Institute of Science
B.S., 1964, Hebrew University of Jerusalem

Professor Reisler has been Professor of Chemistry at USC since 1987 and has been appointed a University Professor since 2021. Her research interests are in the area of chemical reaction dynamics. Specifically, she studies the photochemistry and reaction mechanisms of molecules important in the atmosphere, stratosphere, and combustion, using sophisticated laser and imaging techniques some of which developed by her research group.  Her recent work has focused on photodissociation of free radicals and carbenes.  She has also explored bond breaking processes in networks of water and ices and in small clusters.  She is the author of over 190 scientific publications and book chapters. She was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1996, AAAS in 2012, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2021.  She won an NSF Faculty Award for Women Scientists and Engineers in 1991, a Max Planck Research Award in 1994, the Broida Prize of the American Physical Society in 2005, and the Herschbach Medal of the Dynamics of Molecular Collisions Conference in 2017. In 2002 she was appointed the first holder of the Lloyd Armstrong Jr. Endowed Chair in Science and Engineering in recognition of her leadership role in advancing the careers of women in science and engineering at USC through the WiSE program. For her work in WiSE she was recognized by the Inspiring Women in STEM Award by Insight into Diversity magazine, 2016. She served as Chemistry Department Chair in 2003-2005 and as Dornsife College Faculty Development Director for Natural Sciences and Math since 2008. She is also the recipient of the USC Provost’s Excellence in Mentoring Award for her long-term contributions to the mentoring of students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty. In 2019, the ACS Journal of Physical Chemistry devoted an issue (Festschrift) to celebrating her life-long achievements and contributions to science (see: https://pubs.acs.org/page/jpcafh/vsi/reisler-festschrift).
