A quick academic summary runs as follows: Trained as a cultural anthropologist sympathetic to history, I concentrate on circulations of science, technology and medicine in colonial and postcolonial contexts. I have conducted research in Europe, French Guiana, Uganda and South Africa, exploring topics from penal colonies and space technology to ethics and medical humanitarianism. I taught for two decades at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before moving to USC in 2020, where I continue to work on collaborative projects related to humanitarian design.
