Immaterial — SOPHIE Tribute

ByLuke Greenwood

“On January 30th, 2021, the music producer SOPHIE unexpectedly passed away at only 34 years old. She was one of the most innovative artists living, and her influence has been widely felt, especially in how it shaped today’s pop and dance music communities. She pioneered a new musical landscape by challenging binaries such as masculine/feminine, synthetic/authentic, commercial/artistic, and avante-garde/pop. In doing so, she also created new space for women and queer people to feel accepted, empowered, and connected.

This is an animated music video for her song “Immaterial.” It visualizes the lyrics using detailed references to, and recreations of, content across her entire body of work. These include album covers, stage productions, photo shoots, music videos, and sound design. It originally aired as part of USC Femfest’s 2021 livestream, and has since been revised.”
