We are very excited to report we have a measure of microbial activity in the rocks of the Loihi sea mount. We have measured the effect of substrate concentration on the rate of enzyme-catalyzed reaction in rocks and found discrete differences between stations for phosphatase and aminopeptidase. We have measured the DNA in the rocks and the biomass of microbes. Here are some pictures of the site. Our publication is in the works right now.
