Your Future Awaits
In the information economy, organizations depend on the power of big data to solve problems, gain a competitive advantage, and anticipate the future. Many data science programs train students to apply advanced algorithms. But there is a critical need for those who possess a deeper understanding of the statistical methods needed to actually build and manipulate algorithms — the creators who change the world by making data-driven solutions possible. By investing in USC Dornsife’s data science program, you’ll master sophisticated mathematics skills and machine learning techniques over four semesters on campus. Graduates are not only qualified for higher level (and higher earning) roles when entering the job market — you’ll move forward with a rare foundation of knowledge that ensures you will be a step ahead in a changing, in-demand field.
Why Mathematical Data Science?
Mathematics is an integral part of data science. Any practicing data scientist who is interested in building a career in data science will have a strong background in a specific mathematical field.

News and Updates
The Mathematical Data Science Program was featured in the USC Dornsife News on November 7, 2025. The article explores the Program’s unique approach to delve into AI’s gears. Read more insight from the Department Chair of Mathematics and current MDS students interviewed for the article.
Industry Speaker Event: Simon Rubinstein-Salzedo “Mathematics of AI Safety Approaches”
On October 17, 2025 we welcomed our Industry guest speaker, Simon Rubinstein-Salzedo. Simon received his PhD in Mathematics in 2012. He is the founder of Euler Circle, a mathematics institute dedicated to teaching college-level math classes to high-school students. He has done research in several areas of mathematics, including number theory, algebraic geometry, combinatorics, probability, and game theory, and he has published books on cryptography, algebraic topology, transition to proofs, and ergodic theory.
Industry Speaker Event: Matt Sherman’s “Data Gaps in the Music Industry”
On September 26, 2025 we welcomed our Industry guest speaker, Matthew Sherman. Matt Sherman is a two-time founder and music artist working at the intersection of entertainment and technology. A graduate of the University of Southern California (Class of 2017), he comes from a family with a 100+ year legacy in American music. Matt is currently CEO & Co-Founder of Str3amcore Labs, where he is building a data protocol designed to bring transparency to the entertainment industry. His work empowers creators globally to protect their intellectual property and secure equitable compensation in the age of AI. Thank you, Matt, for meeting our students and inspiring them with your story!
Welcome to MDS!
On August 25, 2025 we kicked off the Fall 2025 semester and welcomed the incoming cohort of Mathematical Data Science students. Professor Xiaohui Chen is excited to teach MATH 546, Mathematical Statistics for Data Science.
