OUTSTANDING TEACHING ASSISTANT AWARDS go to Eloise Pedersen for teaching HBIO 200 The human animal, and Daniel Aslan, for teaching HBIO 360 – Nutrition and Disease.


University Trustees Award: this award is presented to the graduating senior man who has attained the highest scholarship average of all male students for the four-year period of their undergraduate careers in the University. This year’s award goes to a Human Biology Major, Justin Abe.


SCynergy Award: This award is given to the most outstanding graduating senior in Biological Sciences planning to assume a career in the Biological Sciences other than in the strictly medically related professions. This year’s recipients of the SCynergy Award is an HBIO student: Nimisha Mazumdar


Milo Don Appleman Award: This award, established in memory of Milo Don Appleman, M.D.in 1974, is given to the most outstanding graduating senior pursuing a career in the clinical health sciences. This year’s recipient of the Milo Don Appleman Award is an HBIO undergraduate student: Rita Ohan.


Okin Award: This award was established in the memory of Dr. Milton Okin and is given to the most outstanding sophomore, junior or continuing senior. This year’s recipients of an Okin Award included one HBIO undergraduate students: Joseph Nasei


Milligan Fellowship: This award was established in 2020 in honor of Helen Leslie Milligan Turner who graduated from USC with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in human biology (formerly kinesiology) in 1957. Mrs. Milligan Turner enjoyed her time at USC and wanted to give back to students who are interested in research in human biology. This fellowship is given to students who are sophomore, junior or continuing senior to complete a summer research project. This year’s recipients of the Milligan Fellowship are Ashwini Achutharaman, Devin de Monteiro, Amelia Marvit and Gillian Northrup.

Congratulations to Dr. Lorraine Turcotte, for receiving the 2022 Hanna Reisler Mentorship Award. The Hanna Reisler Mentorship Award is named in honor of one of the founding faculty members of the USC WiSE program and the many years she has dedicated to mentoring faculty and students, especially women, at USC. The award recognizes individuals at USC who have advanced the careers of women in science and engineering through generous and committed professional mentorship.

Dr. Fernanda Staniscuaski is a Brazilian biologist, with a PhD in molecular biology and biotechnology. Dr. Staniscuaski currently holds an associate professor position at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. She founded the Parent in Science Movement, aimed at supporting researchers in the challenging conciliation of motherhood and academia, as well as promoting public policies to increase the participation and retention of women in STEM.
