1. Initial Review. The CSLC admissions committee, composed of the Director of Graduate Studies for each track, conducts the first round of applicant reviews in January. The admissions committee may share dossiers with department faculty or other faculty mentioned in the applicant’s statements.
  2. Interviews. Candidates who make it past the initial review phase are considered semifinalists and will be contacted for a Zoom interview, usually in February. The meeting includes the CSLC admissions committee, composed of the Directors of Graduate Studies for each track. Interviews give us the chance to learn more about you, your research and teaching interests, your motivation to pursue graduate study, your decision to apply to the program, and your plans for the future. The interview is conducted mostly in English but may include some discussion in French.
  3. Campus Visits. Candidates who make it past the interview stage are finalists for admission. They are flown to Los Angeles for a two- or three-day campus visit. During their stay, candidates meet with faculty and doctoral students so that we can get to know one another, share interests, and learn more about the program’s fit. This visit often coincides with the CSLC Graduate Student Symposium, a conference organized by our doctoral students and usually held in early March.
  4. Final Decisions. The CSLC admissions committee solicits feedback from faculty across the program and makes its final decisions. Selected students are usually contacted by mid-March. All admitted students receive five years of financial support.
