Guoping Huang

Guoping Huang, D.Des, is a landscape planning scholar, practitioner and geospatial innovator. His research interests include digital visualization, Geodesign, resilient and sustainable development in developing countries, international planning and spatial data science.

He has conducted a diverse set of urban and landscape planning projects in more than 10 countries, including Malawi, Ghana, South Africa, Columbia, Mexico, Guinea, Mozambique and China. His clients have included The World Bank, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), US Geological Survey, Aga Khan Development Network, Rio Tinto and Anglo American.

His projects have won many international and national awards from academic and professional organizations, including the Esri Geodesign Summit, the International Geodesign Collaboration, and the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Dr. Huang also co-founded one of the most influential digital humanities projects, “Digital Atlas of Roman and Medieval Civilizations.” This project has been cataloged as an important digital resource for historians and other researchers by many leading university libraries in the world.

Prior to joining the Spatial Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California in Fall 2022 as Associate Professor (Teaching) of Spatial Sciences, Dr. Huang was Director of the Spatial Analysis Lab at the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia from 2020-2022. He also was an Assistant Professor (2011-2019) and served as the Graduate Program Director (2017-2019) of the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning in the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia.
