The “Spatial Analysis of School Climate” story map analyses the dataset “Changing Climates of Conflict: A Social Network Experiment in 56 Schools, New Jersey, 2012-2013” which is drawn by ICPSR . Grounded on the Theories of human behavior, individuals attend to the behavior of others in the same group to understand the social norms and adjust their behavior accordingly. The experiment consists of pre-research, wave one survey, anti-conflict program intervention, and wave two surveys. This story map focuses on the pre-research phase, especially revealing the impact of urbanized degree and geographical location of school on individual’s behavior. The pre-research focuses on the demographic information of students, which impacts their performance and behavior in school. Not only does the school environment significantly impact students’ behavior, but also their background, such as networking, geographical location, and educational opportunity, plays an important role in an individual’s behavior.

I believe spatial visualization of demographic background will help understand how individuals adjust their norms in response to the surrounding community atmosphere. This project aims to provide insights for people to understand the impact of the outside factors on their behavior by providing a step-by-step visualization process. As a college student who significantly values school environment, I hope this story map allow people to give more attention to the improvement of the school development.
