Profile

Guoping Huang, D.Des., is a landscape planning scholar, practitioner, and geospatial innovator whose work bridges technology, design, and global development. His research focuses on digital visualization, Geodesign, spatial data science, and resilient and sustainable development in the Global South.

Dr. Huang has led a wide range of urban and landscape planning projects across nearly 20 countries, including Malawi, Ghana, South Africa, Colombia, Mexico, Guinea, Mozambique, and China. His clients and collaborators have included major international organizations and companies such as the World Bank, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Aga Khan Development Network, Rio Tinto, and Anglo American.

As a scholar, Dr. Huang has published widely in the fields of urban and landscape planning. His work appears in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes, contributing to global conversations on sustainable development, spatial analysis, and Geodesign.

His work has been recognized with many national and international awards from academic and professional organizations, including the Esri Geodesign Summit, the International Geodesign Collaboration, the American Society of Landscape Architects, and Scenic Virginia.

Dr. Huang also co-founded the Digital Atlas of Roman and Medieval Civilizations, one of the most widely cited digital humanities projects of its kind. The atlas has been cataloged as a key digital resource by leading research libraries around the world.

Dr. Huang joined the University of Southern California’s Spatial Sciences Institute in Fall 2022 as an Associate Professor (Teaching) of Spatial Sciences. He previously served as Director of the Spatial Analysis Lab at the University of Richmond (2020–2022) and as an Assistant Professor (2011–2019) and Graduate Program Director (2017–2019) in the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning at the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture.
