Shengie Liu, Ph.D. candidate in the Population, Health and Place doctoral program, has been selected as a runner-up winner of the 2024 American Geophysical Union Michael H. Freilich Data Visualization Competition.

This award, named in honor of the former director of NASA’s Earth Science Division and co-hosted by AGU and NASA, provides funding to support Liu’s participation in this year’s AGU Annual Meeting taking place in Washington, D.C. from December 9-13, 2024.

While at the AGU Annual Meeting, Liu will present his paper “Disparities in Daily Temperature Variation Exposure Across U.S. Population and Income Groups.” His competition application was based on the visualizations from his earlier paper that was published in PNAS Nexus. In his presentation, he will demonstrate visualizations from this interactive map.

Liu said, “I am thrilled to have this opportunity to attend this year’s AGU Annual Meeting and to present my work. I extend my sincere thanks to Dr. Emily Smith-Greenaway for emphasizing the importance of visualization during our demography classes and for her invaluable insights and feedback when I was developing these figures.”
