This is my colleague Dr Eugene Gutkin, who was dismissed from USC in the spring of 2000. The university never gave any reason and hid behind the `confidentiality of personnel’ issues when addressed for an explanation.

Dr Gutkin received his PhD from Brandeis University in the late seventies and came to USC in the eighties. After his departure from USC he held several visiting positions and finally was appointed professor at the University of Torun in Poland. He died there several years later in 2013 of Pancreatic Cancer. In May of the following year the University of Torun held a conference in his memory.

Dr Elizabeth Dahab wrote a poem about his life. Also check out her poems about the city of Marseille in southern France.
