How do infants master the sounds of their language? Our research focuses on the role of social interactions between infants and parents during early development as infants are producing their first speech sounds.

Infant learning about speech and language is embedded in a social feedback loop.  Parents respond to babbling vocalizations, and the social reactions of parents can provide opportunities for infant learning.

We want to know how babies use their parents’ responses to learn how to communicate, so we can better understand the development of infants’ language abilities.  When studied as a form of social interaction, vocal precursors such as babbling constitute an important phase in the development of language.

We are interested in inviting infants with typical hearing as well as infants with hearing loss.  If you would like to learn more, please click on the pages on the top bar for more information about our research.
