Frieder Dengler is a PhD Candidate in International Relations at the American University’s School of International Service. His dissertation investigates how China and European polities managed their differences in early modern diplomatic encounters. His analysis challenges conventional narratives about inevitable clashes and unidirectional expansion, and leverages insights from diplomatic history to inform scholarship and policy on contemporary US-China relations. He received his MPhil and an MA from American University, and a BA in Political Science from the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen.
