Policy and Research Intern at TreePeople

Aarushi Modi, Spring 2023

Hello! I am Aarushi, a junior pursuing a major in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Environmental Policy. This semester, I had the privilege of working with TreePeople, a Southern California-based environmental organization. TreePeople’s primary goal is to enhance green spaces in the region by promoting tree planting and adoption. The organization also advocates for superior environmental policies, engages in research on environmental topics, raises awareness, and encourages education. During my internship with TreePeople, I was involved in a significant project that concentrated on augmenting greenery and improving stormwater capture in the LAUSD area. I was trusted with creating a cost-estimate report and cost-calculation model for the schoolyard greening project. This required me to utilize various skills such as research, Excel, stormwater capture best management practices, and organization. Attending professional Zoom meetings with LAUSD school officials was enlightening, as it allowed me to observe the behind-the-scenes workings of a large-scale environmental project. Although my internship was remote, I was fortunate enough to attend the Environmental Youth Summit in person, where I assisted with organizational tasks. The event was an eye-opener, and witnessing the amount of effort that goes into organizing such a gathering was truly inspiring. Additionally, through weekly check-ins and one-on-one meetings, I had the pleasure of meeting many of the TreePeople team, including some of the most talented and inspiring individuals I have ever encountered. Overall, working with TreePeople has been a fulfilling experience, and I feel enriched by the opportunity.
