Joyce C. Chang

Joyce C. Chang, Ph.D. (she/her), is a postdoctoral fellow at the Hartford Institute for Religion Research. She is a sociologist of race and religion whose scholarship focuses particularly on Asian American religious life and the ways religious contexts shape experiences and understandings of race.

Chang’s research examines how congregational contexts intersect with racial identity, civic engagement, and social attitudes among Asian Americans. Her broader work at the Hartford Institute focuses on congregational life and vitality, including applied research designed to help religious leaders and organizations better understand the challenges, opportunities, and changing realities facing congregations in the United States. Across this work, she is especially interested in connecting rigorous social scientific research with questions that matter to religious communities and the people who serve them.

Chang earned her Ph.D. in sociology from Baylor University. Her broader work at the Hartford Institute focuses on congregational life and vitality, including applied research designed to help religious leaders and organizations better understand the challenges, opportunities, and changing realities facing congregations in the United States.
