Richard N. Pitt
Biography
Richard N. Pitt is Professor of Sociology at the University of California San Diego. A (sociological) social psychologist by training, his research agenda focuses on the construction, maintenance, and atrophy of social identities, particularly academic and professional ones. A scholar of both religion and higher education, he is the author of Divine Callings: Understanding the Call To Ministry In Black Pentecostalism (NYU Press 2012), Church Planters: Inside The World Of Religion Entrepreneurs (Oxford Press 2021), Double Majors: Influences, Identities, and Impacts (Teagle Foundation 2012), and Beyond The PhD: STEM Postdoc Identities, Interactions, and Outcomes (KDP 2022). An award-winning teacher, Professor Pitt teaches courses in social psychology, (higher) education, family, gender and sexuality, and race and ethnicity. His new research examines career decisions of young people relocating with their spouses as they start MD and Phd programs.
