USC archaeology major Camila Grases volunteered in the ArcLab this summer. Camila was a great help in checking in all the flood artifacts, checking for damage (mold, spalling, cracking, etc.), returning them to their home boxes, and updating our PastPerfect database.
“What excited me the most about the prospect of working at the lab at the beginning of the summer was the close proximity I would have to the thousands of years of history stored in the collection here at USC. What I failed to understand but was ecstatic to learn was that I would actually be working with these objects, touching them, moving them, examining them, and entering them into the data base.”

Dr. Tracie Mayfield and @uscarchaeology students completed an archaeological field school on Old Providence and Santa Catalina Islands, Colombia during summer ⛏
Located 130 miles off the coast of Nicaragua, the islands have been a center of global trade and commerce since the establishment of an English colony in 1629.
Novelist Robert Louis Stevenson was inspiried to write the book ‘Treasure Island’ after visiting in the 1800’s, and Pablo Escobar was a resident in the 1980’s.
The community-led project seeks to assist ongoing Native efforts to untangle and decolonize the complex culture history of the Islands, by collecting and exploring archaeologically landscapes.
