The Dornsife Way

Strength of mind, depth of understanding, and generosity of spirit. These are the principles that unite the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. The Dornsife Way recognizes that professional success is most fulfilling when paired with civic virtue. Our students, faculty and staff create an intellectual community that is vibrant, inventive, and purpose driven. Together we are useful in the world, and we aspire to live rich lives in all senses of the word.

Your Education Adds Up to Something More

    Leadership

The most effective leaders see how the parts of a hard problem connect, including the parts nobody else is looking at. That same attention shows up in how they listen, as often as they weigh in. When it’s time to decide, they act on what they’ve seen and what they believe. What makes them worth following isn’t the insight. It’s that they’ll stand behind it.

    Service and Civic-Mindedness

Those who stay engaged in their communities aren’t usually doing it out of obligation. They’ve stopped seeing their own life as separate from everyone else’s, and from the democratic systems that shape civic life. A Dornsife education taps into that awareness in real time, in a city like Los Angeles where a policy, an institution, or a leader can have a profound effect on a neighbor, a neighborhood, or the millions of people who live there. Meaning well is where it starts. The liberal arts channel that into impact. Working across disagreement, communicating clearly, and balancing evidence with what’s possible.

    Empathy and Perspective

A Dornsife education brings you face to face with lives and ideas that might be unfamiliar in circumstance, in belief, in what someone’s up against. No matter what you study, you practice seeing situations from more than one angle and surfacing from gray areas what is unsaid. Bring that habit into the world, and unique challenges stop flattening into a simple story. You are compelled to get underneath it — the hopes, fears, and human conditions that are universal — and to appreciate those connections for the ways they help you make better sense of the world.

    Conscience and Discernment

Right versus wrong isn’t always the dilemma. The harder choice is right versus right. Both sides mean well. Either one still means giving something up that matters. A Dornsife education challenges you to confront these decisions, in what you study and in the debates you have about it, until holding both sides honestly is just how you think. It’s a skill that will help you navigate issues in every part of your life — your family, your career, a friendship under strain. What’s at stake isn’t just getting it right, but whether the reasons for how you arrived at a decision still hold up when you look back.

    Adaptability

The world doesn’t wait for consensus before it changes shape. Seeing change as room to move, not a threat to survive, turns disruption into a running start. Whether you’re working through a text or a data set, a Dornsife education keeps proving there’s rarely one reading that settles a question completely. Getting used to that builds a comfort with things being unsettled — a huge advantage in a world where industries are rewriting themselves and careers on the horizon haven’t been invented yet.  It’s the same instinct at work when a new city, a new relationship, or a new stage of life asks you to figure out who you are again.

    Restless Curiosity

Nobody has to teach a kid to ask why. But growing up often teaches us to stop, to treat wonder as unproductive… a habit to outgrow. During your time at Dornsife, feeding curiosity is your full-time job, a privilege that you might not have again. And you won’t be able to shake that appetite. You’ll honor the instinct throughout your career and your life, bringing joy in the unending pursuit to uncover deeper questions and make better sense of the world.

A Centuries-Old Tradition Made for the Moment

The term “liberal arts” originates from the Latin phrase “Ars Liberalis.” Liberalis, meaning free. And Ars, meaning skills that empower. More than a list of subjects, they are a way of making sense of the world, and using that understanding to make a difference. It’s a tradition that is as powerful now as it’s ever been.

… these studies are the food of youth, the delight of old age; the ornament of prosperity, the refuge and comfort of adversity; a delight at home, and no hindrance abroad; they are companions by night, and in travel, and in the country.

JEP STEM Education Programs and partners created a new curricular focus on microplastics. A three-pronged effort involved integrating ocean-themed lessons in 2nd grade classrooms, a teacher training workshop for high school educators, and a microplastic and plastic pollution focused lesson and activity for a K-5th grade after-school STEM program.
