MATH 490 is a course undergraduates students may sign up for, and get credit in, when doing research under the direction of a faculty member, see this page for suggestions on locating a faculty advisor. As MATH 490 is run by the Mathematics department, a student needs one of our faculty members to run it, at least formally. If a student finds an instructor outside the department to supervise a course the student thinks would be suitable for a MATH 490, the student can ask the outside instructor to write up a summary of what the course entails, including how the student will be evaluated. If, from the summary of the course, Math deems the course appropriate for MATH 490, then one of our faculty can formally be the instructor of the course if the outside instructor agrees to communicate with the supervising faculty in our department at the end of the semester how the student performed, so that a grade can be assigned.
