The Breed Street Shul Project is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to bring together the Jewish, Latino and other communities of Los Angeles by rehabilitating the landmark Breed Street Shul in Boyle Heights. By transforming the campus into a center of arts, culture, education and service for its current neighbors, we will make it a place of learning, teaching and wonder for all.

The Breed Street Shul Project is not simply a nonprofit organization: it is an ongoing effort of the Jewish, Latino, Boyle Heights, and other communities throughout Los Angeles to build an outstanding resource for the neighborhood and the city as a whole. This means that volunteers are crucial. Please let us know who you are, what interests you, and what draws you to the Breed Street Shul Project. We are committed not only to building great new projects, but also providing stimulating and rewarding experiences for our volunteers.

Meet the Staff:

Orly Olivier – Managing Director

Orly Olivier is the head of the Breed Street Shul Project and comes to her responsibilities with a strong background in community service. A native Angelena, Orly was acquainted with the concept of civic engagement early in life as her mother participated in the founding of L.A. Care, the largest provider of health insurance for low-income residents of Los Angeles. Her mother’s inspiration compelled her to be actively involved in similar projects, such as the Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA) where she currently works as the visual arts coordinator for HOLA which provides free academic, athletic, and artistic opportunities for youth in Los Angeles’s Rampart District. Orly’s personal craft is in photography and she currently manages a blog celebrating her grandmother’s Tunisian restaurant recipes, Petitt Takett (http://petittakett.com/) as a means of encouraging individuals to relook at religion through the prism of food culture. Orly has volunteered at the Breed Street Shul for a number of years and is enthusiastic about leading the historic house of worship to its new future as a welcoming community center in the heart of Boyle Heights.
