Faculty Awards & Honors
Excellence in Scholarship
Many USC Dornsife faculty members have been recognized with professional honors and induction into distinguished academic societies that reflect their standing among the most celebrated and accomplished scholars in the world. This page lists the many current and active professors who have received awards—building on the success of many emeritus faculty who made tremendous contributions to their field before them.
American Academy of Arts and Sciences Fellows
Founded in 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is one of the country’s most prestigious honorary societies and independent research centers.
Designed as a forum for leading scholars to exchange ideas, the Academy remains an interdisciplinary organization dedicated to critical analysis of society’s most pressing problems. Its membership is drawn from across the disciplines of mathematics, the physical and biological sciences, medicine, the social sciences, humanities, business, government, public affairs, and the arts.
Election to the Academy as a Fellow is extremely selective and denotes high achievement and accomplishment in cultivating the arts and sciences. Each year, the privilege of nominating new members is reserved to current Fellows. The Academy also grants honorary membership to a select number of foreign scholars.

Guggenheim Fellowship Recipients
Guggenheim Fellowships are awarded to men and women who have demonstrated exceptional scholarly productivity or artistic achievement. These “midcareer” awards are intended to support gifted scholars and artists and provide them with as much creative freedom as possible.
The selection process is rigorous and the competition is fierce. Despite receiving nearly 4,000 applications each year, the Guggenheim Foundation is only able to grant approximately 220 fellowships annually.

MacArthur Fellows
MacArthur Fellowships are presented to especially promising scholars and professionals based on originality, insight and potential. Each year, the MacArthur Foundation awards approximately 20 to 30 of these $500,000 fellowships.
Nicknamed “the Genius Grant,” this fellowship is intended as an investment in the creative powers of the recipient and is designed to have as few restrictions as possible. The purpose of the Fellows Program “is to enable recipients to exercise their own creative instincts for the benefit of human society.”
The MacArthur Foundation solicits nominations from established experts in a variety of scholarly and professional fields and does not accept unsolicited nominations.

National Academy Members
National Academy of Sciences
The National Academy of Sciences was established in 1863 with the twin goals of promoting science for the benefit of the public and to provide independent counsel to the United States government on science and technology issues that affect policy decisions.
Election to the Academy recognizes distinguished achievements in original scientific research and is widely considered one of the highest honors a scientist can receive. Only members are allowed to nominate scholars for election and successful nominations must pass an extensive and careful vetting process. Only 84 new members can be elected annually.
National Academy of Engineering
Under the authority of its charter, the National Academy of Sciences established the National Academy of Engineering in 1964. Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.
Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering research, practice or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature” and to the “pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing and implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.”
Institute of Medicine
Established in 1970 as the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine is an independent, nonprofit organization that works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision makers and the public. Tasked with the responsibility to ask and answer the nation’s most pressing health questions, the Institute of Medicine is one of the country’s highest independent authorities on medicine, medical science and health policy.
For those at the top of their field, membership in the Institute reflects the highest levels of distinguished achievement, committed service, and the willingness and ability to help the Institute further its mission. Nominations are confidential and can only be initiated by existing members familiar with the scholarship and service of the prospective member. Membership is very selective as only 70 members can be elected each year.

National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship Recipients
Alongside the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) was established in 1965 as an independent federal agency designed to promote excellence in the humanities and to encourage the public to take notice of humanistic endeavors. It is one of the largest benefactors of the humanities in the United States.
Fellowships are awarded to individuals conducting advanced research that may be of value to scholars, the general public, or both. Fellowships support six to twelve months of continuous, full-time research, and recipients are expected to produce a project with cultural value that the NEH can make available to the largest possible audience.

Nobel Prize Recipients
Each year Nobel Prizes are awarded for achievement in physiology or medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and peace. In 1968 the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel was also established in close association with the Nobel Prizes.
Widely considered the most prestigious international accolades in their respective fields, the Nobel Prizes are awarded to those who “have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind.”
Each year, the Nobel committees invite a select number of scholars, scientists, elected officials and previous Nobel Prize recipients to submit candidates for consideration. The winners receive a medal, a diploma and a cash prize.
