707 Wilshire

Wilshire and Hope

This building has the distinction of having been the tallest in California from 1972 until 1989 (and the tallest on the West Coast until 1985), reaching a lofty 858 feet. It was completed six months later and five feet taller than the more recognizable Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco. Was it 1972 when Los Angeles surpassed San Francisco in its reach for the heights of world city status? In this picture, the building still sports the now-defunct "First Interstate" logo.
