Mixed-Race Families in the West: What Is Lost and What Is Gained?

What role does California and the West play in shaping the nation's understandings of mixed-race families and individuals? How is the growing mixed-race population shaping education, politics, public policy and the media?

Drawing from the region's historic diversity, the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West will explore issues of mixed-race and multiethnic identity in an inter-disciplinary workshop. Designed around a series of open-ended discussions and commentaries, this workshop brings together participants and commentators from diverse backgrounds to explore the history and future of mixed-race experience in the West. We hope that this cross-disciplinary examination will lead to ongoing conversations about this critical shift in personal and collective identity, and its potential influence on Southern California and the nation.
