Summary Statement of Research Interests

Professor Cheung researches East-West literary relations, visual culture, comparative poetics and contemporary Chinese literature. Under the pseudonym Chang Ts'o(Zhang Cuo), he is also a professional poet who has published 18 collections of modern poetry in Chinese.

New Courses Developed

Asian Supernatural Tales, COLT: ARLT100g (4 units), This course is a study of the ghost and supernatural tales in East Asian literature, dealing with themes such as foxes, monsters, vengeful spirits, metamorphosis, Utopia, the quest for the eternal elixir and life as a dream…etc. Western theories such as Todorov’s genre-modes studies of the fantastic and the marvelous, and the Freudian concept of the uncanny will be introduced to enhance further comprehension of these tales. Students will: 1/ survey Asian supernatural tales as literary texts and discourse, 2/ view these tales in the context of the religious-philosophical orientations of the Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist paradigms, and 3/ study the narratives and visual representations in China and Japan to ascertain whether there are particular emphases, persistent literary motifs, or recurring patterns underlying these tales on ghosts and the supernatural, on existence and phenomena in the life beyond., Fall 2007   
Introduction to Chinese Culture, Art and Literature (4 units), EALC 145g, This course provides a historical introduction to the culture, art and literature of pre-modern China through the lens of the cultural products of identity. We examine the artistic and cultural developments from the beginning of the proto-historical Bronze Age onto the Empires of Qin and Han, the Imperial States of Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing in an attempt to see how cultural identities are simultaneously created and expressed through varied artistic mediums (bronze, sculpture, porcelain, paintings) and literary genres of these periods. This class will study the visual, cultural, and literary texts under the three major topics of 1/ The Discovery of the Self, 2/ Illusion of the Self, Nature, and Religion, 3/ Towards the Harmony of Self and Nature., Fall 2007
