This semester, I have had the wonderful opportunity of being accepted into the organization known as Helenes. As an all women’s service organization and “the official hostesses of USC”, this club has one of the most competitive application processes I have ever been through. Out of 300 applicants, only 25 luckily ladies were selected — and I was one of them. Never ever have I been SO happy and excited to get to know such a great group of classy & sassy ladies.
The reason I decided to join was simple: my recent lack of community service. Last semester, due to an overload of courses and organizations, I had been drowning in work and unable to take part in outreach, a fact that deeply hurt my hearty conscience. So this semester, when I realized I would have to complete 10 service events throughout the semester for Helenes, I was ecstatic.
Now with a little less than a month before the semester ends, I have recently started to reflect on how fortunate I am to have been given this chance. I probably would have never done so much community outreach at USC and around the LA area if it wasn’t for this organization. It taught me to love doing service, even when that means waking up at 4 AM. It showed me that just an hour a week can make all the difference in a little kid’s life. And it exemplified not only the amount of commitment it takes but also the grand reward it comes with. So despite my INCREDIBLY hectic semester, I have never thoroughly enjoyed being so busy in my life.
Helenes love and mine,
