vehicles, addressing an environmental challenge in the transportation and energy sectors. The study, which was funded in part by a Wrigley Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/wrigley\/research\/faculty-innovation-awards\/\">Faculty Innovation Award<\/a>, recently appeared in the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/full\/10.1021\/jacs.4c10838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Journal of American Chemical Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40863\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40863\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40863\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t sure if it was possible to fully recycle composite materials,\u201d said USC Wrigley Institute faculty affiliate <a href=\"https:\/\/today.usc.edu\/profile\/travis-williams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travis Williams<\/a>, professor of chemistry at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. \u201cAs wonderful as these materials are for making energy-efficient vehicles, the problem with composites is we don\u2019t have a practical route to recycle them, so the materials end up in landfills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The chemistry demonstrated in the study \u2014 a partnership among Williams and professors <a href=\"https:\/\/today.usc.edu\/profile\/steven-nutt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steven Nutt<\/a>\u00a0of the M.C. Gill Composites Center at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mann.usc.edu\/faculty\/clay-c-c-wang-phd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clay C.C. Wang<\/a>\u00a0of the USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Berl Oakley of the University of Kansas \u2014 is a new approach that shows that composite materials can be recovered and recycled in a manner that preserves the integrity of the materials.<\/p>\n<p>Projections indicate that by 2030, 6,000-8,000 composite-containing commercial aircraft will reach end of life, and by 2050 retired wind turbines will generate 483,000 tons of composite waste.
