Based in the heart of the Blue Cavern Onshore State Marine Conservation Area, boaters have access to clean and clear ocean waters protected from fishing, anchoring and collecting, which impart some of the most natural marine environments in Southern California.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Boaters at the WMSC are taught by our resident staff via active training modules how to conduct safe boating operations and become knowledgeable vessel operators. All available WMSC vessels are in proper working order, covered under BoatUS Vessel Assist Tow Membership, and come maintained with serviceable required boating equipment such as: VHF radios, Personal Floatation Devices, distress signaling devices, fire extinguishers, SCUBA diving support equipment, and current vessel registrations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The WMSC fleet of small vessels is comprised of two size classes: (1)\u00a0<b><i>Small Vessels<\/i><\/b>\u00a0from 11-21 feet in length, powered by no greater than 50 horsepower Honda outboards, that allow users access to the Small Boat Boundary (SBB) and (2)\u00a0<b><i>Large Vessels<\/i><\/b>\u00a0from 16-23 feet in length, powered by Honda outboards up to 150 horsepower, which grant access to the Large Boat Boundary (LBB). See the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/wrigley\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/116\/2025\/06\/Boating-Safety-Manual-June-2025-compressed.pdf\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Boating Safety Manual<\/b><\/span><\/a>\u00a0for details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In order to become a USC\/WIES boating Trainee, you must:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">Complete a NASBLA-approved California State Boating Safety Course and apply for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/californiaboatercard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">CA Boater Card<\/span><\/a>, then provide proof of course completion and CA Boater Card to the WMSC Marine Operations Manager. You must take your CA Boater Card with you on all voyages on WMSC vessels. We recommend the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/boatus.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s1\">BoatUS Boating Safety Course<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(free course, $10 for the CA Boaters Card).<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">All boat operators must complete a shore-based USC\/WIES Small Boat Orientation. The purpose of this orientation is to familiarize users with float plans, boating procedures, and the location and proper use of required boating equipment.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Once steps 1 &amp; 2 are complete, you must complete an on-water USC\/WIES Small Boat Operator Training that involves proficiency in the safe operation of small boats through hands-on boat handling operations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-4-ZRs91mb7dx\" aria-controls=\"section-1-4-ZRs91mb7dx\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">Visiting Boat Operators<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-4-ZRs91mb7dx\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-4-ZRs91mb7dx\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p class=\"p1\">In order to be approved to operate USC\/WIES vessels, a\u00a0<b><i>Visiting Boat Operator<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(someone who is not USC faculty, student, or staff) must provide the Marine Operations Manager with proof of practical experience and operator training through one of the following:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">A Verification of Training (VOT) letter from the home institution\u2019s Boating Safety Officer or equivalent, or<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">An SBSA Motorboat Operator Training Course (MOTC) certificate, or<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Equivalent information detailing boating experience to be evaluated and approved by the USC\/WIES Marine Operations Manager.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><i>Visiting Boat Operators<\/i><\/b>\u00a0must also:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">Provide the USC\/WIES Marine Operations Manager with a copy of their CA Boater Card and take the card on all voyages on WMSC vessels.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Complete applicable portions of the USC\/WIES Small Boat Orientation.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Complete applicable portions of the USC\/WIES Small Boat Operator Training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Under most circumstances, visiting researchers may bring a vessel from their home institution to support filed research activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-5-ZRs91mb7dx\" aria-controls=\"section-1-5-ZRs91mb7dx\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">Boat Availability<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-5-ZRs91mb7dx\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-5-ZRs91mb7dx\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p class=\"p1\">Boats at the WMSC are typically available to approved boat operators throughout the year. However, during the peak summer months of May-August, as well as during December-April (when inclement weather is more common), availability of boats may be limited. Be sure to check availability in advance of your visit. Although the waters around Catalina Island are normally calm, adverse weather conditions during your stay may have an impact on your research abilities. Please plan accordingly. All boaters at WMSC receive proper training on how to conduct safe boat-based SCUBA dives.
