Vanessa R. Schwartz is Professor of Art History and History at the University of Southern California, where she directs the Visual Studies Research Institute<\/a> and its graduate certificate program<\/a>. A graduate of Princeton University (Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, 1986) she received her PhD in History at the University of California, Berkeley in 1993.<\/p>\n

Schwartz specializes in 19th and 20th c. European and American visual culture, especially photography, film and design. Her latest monograph\u00a0Jet Age Aesthetic: The Glamour of Motion in Motion<\/i><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>was published by Yale University Press in 2020 and was supported by a Millard Meiss award from the College Art Association and a Furthermore Foundation grant. Related publications include with Jason Hill, an edited volume,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Getting the Picture: The Visual Culture of the News<\/i><\/a>\u00a0<\/i><\/span>(2015). She recently co-edited a volume about photobooks in Word and Image, <\/em>and is a co-PI on a Swiss National Research Fund project, directed by Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Staszak about globe-trotters and the \u201ctour du monde\u201d (1869-1914). She and Staszak are\u00a0co-organizing the conference, Picturing as Infrastructure: Globetrotting, Images and the Production of Global Consciousness<\/em>, to be held in Fall 2026.\u00a0Vanessa is writing a new book about visual history in the age of technological reproducibility. She is co-curator of an exhibition at the French National Archives, to open in 2028, about news and photography. She recently published an essay about Taylor Swift’s “Getaway Car” and is writing about her in the context of the history of the world tour.<\/p>\n

She served as a co-curator for \u201cEnfin le cin\u00e9ma!\u201d which opened at the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay in Paris, September 2021, and co-curator of the related show \u201cCity of Cinema: Paris 1850-1907\u201d which opened at LACMA in February 2022.<\/p>\n

She has written extensively about Paris in the late 19th century and the origins of mass visual culture in her books Spectacular Realities: Early Mass Culture in fin-de-si\u00e8cle Paris<\/em> (1998); Cinema and the Invention of Modern Life<\/em> (1995) and It\u2019s So French! Hollywood, Paris and the Making of Cosmopolitan Film Culture<\/em> (2007). She is also the author of Modern France: A Very Short Introduction<\/em> (2011).<\/p>\n

She has been awarded many fellowships and grants, notably from the Mellon Foundation, the Getty Research Institute, The Cullman Center at the New York Public Library, the\u00a0Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. She has held distinguished professorships at Stanford, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes, Paris; the University of Geneva, the Sorbonne, McGill and the Hebrew University.<\/p>\n

She has advised PhD students and post-doctoral fellows in Art History, History and Media Studies.
