{"id":1300,"date":"2023-10-19T19:15:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-19T19:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/uscseagrant-temp\/?page_id=1300"},"modified":"2023-12-07T00:34:37","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T00:34:37","slug":"state-literacy-initiatives","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/uscseagrant\/state-literacy-initiatives\/","title":{"rendered":"State Literacy Initiatives"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California Congressional Bill Assembly Bill (AB) 1548 in 2003 required the identification of environmental education principles and concepts that would be used to establish the curriculum that has been created to bring education about the environment into the primary and secondary classrooms throughout California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USC Sea Grant is one of the partners of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ca-eli.org\/\">California Environmental Literacy Initiative<\/a> (CAELI), an initiative that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brings high-quality environmental literacy programs to all the youth in California.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n    \n    \n        \n    \n  \n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--interactive-content-pane \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--interactive-content-pane\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n<div class=\"inner-wrapper\">\n  <div class=\"left\">\n      \n    <div class=\"pagination-wrapper\">\n      <ul class=\"interactive-content-pane-pagination\"><\/ul>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n  <div class=\"right\">\n          <div class=\"swiper\">\n        <div class=\"swiper-wrapper\">\n                      <div class=\"swiper-slide\">\n              <h3 class=\"pane-title\">\n                Climate Literacy \n              <\/h3>\n                                  \n<div class=\"f--field f--description\">\n\n    \n  <p><b>Climate literacy <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is essential as residents and visitors recognize and adapt to the impacts of climate along the Southern California Coastal region.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/uscseagrant\/youth-exploring-sea-level-rise-science\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youth Exploring Sea level Science (YESS)<\/span><\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provides educators and youth with a guided curriculum to experience place-based phenomena and take action within their communities.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community efforts include <a href=\"\/uscseagrant\/ecology-and-coastal-processes\/\">coastal dune restoration<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calacademy.org\/calcoast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Snapshot CalCoast<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecclps.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Environmental Literacy and Climate Change Projects (ELCCPS)<\/a>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the recently established <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will unite efforts to integrate climate literacy throughout CA formal and nonformal education.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n                          \n  \n                          <\/div>\n                      <div class=\"swiper-slide\">\n              <h3 class=\"pane-title\">\n                Environmental Literacy\n              <\/h3>\n                                  \n<div class=\"f--field f--description\">\n\n    \n  <p>The rich and diverse communities of the Los Angeles region include varied cultural and individual connections to the coast and ocean.\u00a0 The USC Sea Grant educators work with community partners to co-develop education programs that bridge science research, local and traditional ecological knowledge to understand our place in the watershed. This work creates opportunities for all students, especially creating opportunities for Latinx, Black, Indigenous, and other marginalized students and lifelong learners to consider engagement and careers in coastal, marine, and watershed environments.
