LACSSP was an initiative of California Department of Education’s California Mathematics and Science Partnership (CaMSP) from April 2010 through June 2013. The partnership included the University of Southern California Sea Grant and School of Education, Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence - West (COSEE-West), and the Los Angeles Education Partnership (LAEP) as lead partners providing professional development and support for teachers of science grades 3 - 8. The partnering charter school organizations included: Inner City Education Foundation (ICEF), Dr. Theodore T. Alexander, Jr. Science Center School, Watts Learning Center, Alliance for College Ready Schools, Aspire: Los Angeles, Synergy Kinetic Academy, Immaculate Conception School. The model provided an opportunity to assess to what degree teacher science instruction in 3rd – 8th grades changed with extended teacher professional development in model based inquiry, when combined with coaching of lesson study and science content enrichment from USC scientists.
