While most classes at USC provide a curriculum on how to be a founder or start a company, this course will view the startup world from an investor&#8217;s perspective. We will look at how to evaluate if a venture is working on a repeatable business model and how to evaluate the revenue models they are proposing. We will also discuss different ways ventures can finance early-stage growth because raising venture capital is not\u00a0for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>James Bottom is the former Project Director of Blackstone LaunchPad USC. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations, was a Team Captain of the National Champion Rose Bowl Team in 2003, and has an MBA from the Marshall School of Business. The Career Center offers some information about these professions, but this course provides a much more extensive, detailed introduction to each potential career choice, sometimes from practitioners in those fields.<\/p>\n<p>Helaine Owen Lopes has worked for 40 years at USC as an Athletic Trainer and a lecturer in the\u00a0Human and Evolutionary Biology\u00a0division of the Biological Sciences department. Her areas of emphases include business and professional writing as well as interdisciplinary and cross-cultural contexts. It will emphasize the use of receptive and expressive skills, including facial expressions and fingerspelling, and prepare for visual and gestural communication.\u00a0 By the end of the course, students will have a better understanding of the deaf and hard of hearing community and acquired essential communication skills.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/profile\/karen-ruiz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Karen Ruiz<\/a> is a Lecturer in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/ling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linguistics<\/a>\u00a0department.\u00a0 She has worked with deaf autistic teens and taught ASL at East Los Angeles College. Unfortunately, our USC community is not immune to these statistics, but you have an opportunity to become an agent of change in suicide prevention.<\/p>\n<p>In this Dornsife Toolkit, you will expand your understanding and knowledge about suicide through evidence-based research theory and learn how to lead suicide prevention trainings to fellow Trojans. This Toolkit will include specialized training and an experiential process in leading peer-to-peer suicide prevention trainings. Additionally, students will learn fundamental counseling skills and is aimed for students seeking hands-on experience in the mental health and well-being field, but all majors are welcome to join and learn.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Briano \u201cDr. B\u201d (he\/him\/el) is Director of Dornsife\u2019s Physical Education &amp; Mind Body Health department and adjunct faculty in Rossier\u2019s Marriage &amp; Family Therapy program. The course will examine topics such as understanding the different types of leadership theories and models; recognizing leadership traits; dissecting philosophies and styles around leadership; examining positive and negative examples of leadership across multimedia and within our own everyday lives; all culminating in the creation of our own leadership philosophies to use in our personal &amp; professional development.<\/p>\n<p>Harold D. Waters, Ph.D., is the Associate Dean of <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/advising\/\">Student Advising in Dornsife<\/a> where he overseas all academic advising policies and processes for the college.\u00a0 Dr. Waters also teaches in the Educational Counseling Program in USC Rossier.\u00a0 He received a BA and MA from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. from Mercer University. Turning that data into clear, compelling visuals is a powerful and in-demand skill.<\/p>\n<p>In this hands-on course, students gain practical experience in data visualization, mapping, and visual storytelling using real LA datasets and accessible tools such as Tableau and QGIS. We also explore the ethical use of AI in data analysis and design, examining how emerging technologies shape interpretation, bias, and decision-making. Throughout the semester, we consider how visual communication influences media, business, government, and community organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Students create digital maps, data graphics, and creative print projects, culminating in a portfolio-ready final visualization. \u00a0The course is open to all majors. Students will expand their knowledge and appreciation of social determinants of health. The course will focus on self-examination, discussion, case studies and social analysis allowing students to develop cultural competency with a focus on health and medicine. Ultimately, students will come away with a broader understanding of diversity and differing perspectives and the unique needs of multicultural populations. This knowledge will prepare students to engage in effective, culturally congruent, and positive interpersonal communications.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lancaster completed her Ph.D. in Preventive Medicine at Keck School of Medicine of USC and has an interdisciplinary background in community health, translational science, biomedical investigations, mindfulness, and psychology, with an emphasis on innovation in medicine and multicultural health education.
