<h2>\n          A two-unit Special Topics course offered Spring 2027\n      <\/h2>\n\n\n<\/div>\n      \n                  \n<div class=\"f--field f--description\">\n\n    \n  <p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dornsife College, the Marshall and Viterbi Schools will offer three classes this spring that provide current assessments of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and its range of uses, implications, and effects.\u00a0 The Dornsife class is MDA 298. \u00a0It earns 2 units and is open to all undergraduates at USC on a credit\/no credit basis.\u00a0\u00a0 To honor and leverage our intellectual diversity, this Dornsife class is coordinated with a Dean\u2019s Lecture series, in which a range of college faculty experts on A.I. will speak from their various interdisciplinary perspectives on its risks, rewards, and trajectory.<\/p>\n<p>The course will conclude with an open forum, allowing students who participated during the semester to attend a moderated \u201ctalk back\u201d event, when students can meet with colleagues from across the college to share experiences and ideas.<\/p>\n<p>All lectures and the final event will be hosted by Professor Emily Hodgson class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>their<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>perspective on A.I. is important for students. \u00a0Speakers will address topics such as, but not limited to:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>the physical requirements for AI use \u2014 energy requirements, economic implications, the consequences of AI for the environment<\/li>\n<li>the effect of AI on humans \u2014 ethical implications; AI\u2019s effects on the human brain; homogenization of language (and thought); the nature of humanity in this new environment<\/li>\n<li>the effect of AI use on research \u2014 cutting edge science on the development and working of AI; AI as a research tool; scholars skilled in evaluating AI systems: the pros \/ cons and implications of AI systems being used; maximizing AI\u2019s research effectiveness<\/li>\n<li>the historical and social evolution of AI \u2014 AI in comparison to other technological revolutions; anti-AI sources and sentiments; political implications, AI\u2019s effect on international relations; regulatory structures for (or lack thereof) and implications<\/li>\n<li>the current use of AI \u2013 popular culture debates on any of Undergraduate Education.\u00a0 Her research focuses on eighteenth-century British literature and culture.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/our-leadership\/james-bullock\/\">James Bullock<\/a><\/strong><\/span> is Dean of Dornsife College, an astrophysicist with research interests in galaxy formation, cosmology, and the nature of dark matter.\u00a0 He has served as chair of the Space Telescope Science Institute Council and chair of the James Webb Space Telescope Users Committee and founded the UC Southern California Center for Galaxy Evolution.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cmbs\/antonio-damasio\/\">Antonio Damasio<\/a><\/strong><\/span> is an award-winning neuroscientist and Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/bci\/\">Brain and Creativity Institute<\/a>. \u00a0He is Professor of Neuroscience, Psychology and Philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/profile\/morteza-dehghani\/\"><strong>Morteza Dehghani<\/strong><\/a><\/span> is Professor of Psychology and Computer Science, and the Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/ccls\/\">Center of Computational Language Sciences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/our-leadership\/ian-ehrenreich\/\">Ian Ehrenreich<\/a><\/strong><\/span> is a distinguished scholar of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences and serves as Dornsife Divisional Dean for the Life Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/poir\/2026\/06\/01\/professor-robert-english-named-usc-dornsife-communicator-of-the-year\/\">Rob English<\/a><\/strong><\/span> is a globally known expert on international foreign policy and defense analysis with expertise on Russia, the former USSR and Eastern Europe. \u00a0He is Associate Professor of International Relations, Environmental Studies, and Slavic Languages and Literature.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/seanfraga.com\">Sean Fraga<\/a><\/strong><\/span> is an environmental historian and creator of <a href=\"https:\/\/booksnake.app\">Booksnake<\/a>, a tool that allows users to explore digitized archival materials using augmented reality.\u00a0He is Assistant Professor of Teaching in Environmental Studies and History.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/profile\/lucas-herchenroeder\/\"><strong>Lucas Herchenroeder<\/strong><\/a><\/span> is a scholar in the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/emsi\/\">USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute<\/a> and Associate Professor of Teaching in Classics.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alexislandau.com\/about\"><strong>Alexis Landau<\/strong><\/a><\/span> is a published novelists and Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Writing Program.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cmbs\/ryan-leack\/\"><strong>Ryan Leack<\/strong><\/a><\/span> is a poet and co-host of the podcast <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livetheory.org\">Live Theory.<\/a><\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0He is Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Writing Program.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/profile\/mark-marino\/\">Mark Marino<\/a><\/strong><\/span> is a scholar of digital literature and writing, Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/haccslab.com\/about\/\">The Humanities and Critical Code Studies Lab<\/a> and Professor of Teaching in the Writing Program.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/profile\/sarah-mesle\/\"><strong>Sarah Mesle<\/strong><\/a><\/span> is
