\n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <h1>Location of the SPOT Station<\/h1>\n<div class=\"html-content lg-font\">\n<p>The SPOT station (33\u02da33\u2019 N, 118\u02da24\u2019 W) is located approximately 10 miles offshore from the Port of Los Angeles in the southern California Bight.<\/p>\n<p>Coastal areas are a home to nearly half of the U.S. population and contribute significantly to the economic and social vitality of the nation. \u00a0There are more than 15 million people who live in the greater Los Angeles region. \u00a0The proximity of the SPOT station to a highly impacted and urban coastline provides a unique vantage point to study the impact that human activity can have on the marine environment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p><strong>GSA Permission Granted for Image taken from\u00a0<em>Earth Science in the Urban Ocean: The Southern California Continental Borderland<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>By Lee and Normark (2009)<\/p>\n<p>Biogeochemical and physical water column properties measured monthly by ship demonstrate low surface chlorophyll\u00a0<em>a<\/em>concentrations (&lt; 2 ug\/L) year-round. Relatively shallow mixing in winter (MLD max ~ 50 m) stimulates slight increases in Chlorophyll\u00a0<em>a<\/em>concentrations in spring.
