All students are brought into the program with five years of full funding via a Dornsife\/Graduate School Fellowship. The fellowship includes a $41,200 yearly stipend (AY 2025-26), health and dental insurance, and mandatory university fees. The Fellowship provides two years of fellowship, without other obligations, and three years of support as a teaching assistant. Students may also be funded by research assistantships and competitive internal and external fellowships.<\/p>\n<p>Incoming students may be selected to receive the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/graduateschool.usc.edu\/fellowships\/fellowships-for-phd-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Provost\u2019s Fellowship Top Off<\/a>. These top-offs represent the university&#8217;s highest award for incoming students, and increase a student\u2019s stipend to $40,422.<\/p>\n<p>Incoming students may also be awarded Sociology&#8217;s W.E.B Du Bois and Ida B. Wells-Barnett Graduate Student Scholars Award. The award is given to incoming graduate students who exemplify the scholarship and spirit of Du Bois and Wells-Barnett. Students will receive two years of paid memberships to a sociological organization of their choice, a $1,000 research fund for the first year, and an additional $750 travel award to attend one Du Boisian Scholar Network Convening or similar convening.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to our financial support package, our graduate students can apply for as many as three different types of additional funding each year. These\u00a0awards are funded, in part, by the\u00a0Frey Endowment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n      \n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--accordions \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--accordions\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n  \n      <ul>\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-1-LX41r1YHfJ\" aria-controls=\"section-1-1-LX41r1YHfJ\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">The Bessie McClenahan Research Collaboration Grant<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-1-LX41r1YHfJ\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-1-LX41r1YHfJ\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>The Bessie McClenahan Research Collaboration Grant\u00a0provides summer research money to graduate students who are working on a paper collaboratively with a faculty member.\u00a0Bessie McClenahan was the first woman to earn a PhD in USC&#8217;s Sociology department in 1928, and became a half-time faculty member in Sociology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-2-LX41r1YHfJ\" aria-controls=\"section-1-2-LX41r1YHfJ\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">The Emory Bogardus Research Enhancement Grant<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-2-LX41r1YHfJ\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-2-LX41r1YHfJ\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>The Emory Bogardus Research Enhancement Grant\u00a0pays for costs related to dissertation research and\/or attendance at specialized training seminars.\u00a0USC&#8217;s Sociology department was founded in 1915 by Emory Bogardus, who served as the department&#8217;s founding chair for 31 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-3-LX41r1YHfJ\" aria-controls=\"section-1-3-LX41r1YHfJ\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">The Constance Ahrons Travel Award<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-3-LX41r1YHfJ\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-3-LX41r1YHfJ\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>The Constance\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Ahrons<\/span>\u00a0Travel Award\u00a0pays for costs related to participation in professional meetings.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/05\/us\/constance-ahrons-dead.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/05\/us\/constance-ahrons-dead.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1641326459193000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1-RXJtQ5A67TV08UJesUuC\">Connie\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Ahrons<\/span>\u00a0(1937-2021)<\/a>\u00a0joined USC in 1984. She became director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Training Program (MFT) in 1996 and a professor emerita in 2001. She was a founding member of the Council on Contemporary Families. She is widely known for her 1994 book,\u00a0<i>The Good Divorce<\/i>. Sociology&#8217;s PhD program owes a special debt to Professor\u00a0<span class=\"il\">Ahrons<\/span> &#8212; she ensured that the Frey Endowment that we use to support graduate student travel and research transferred to our PhD program when the MFT program ended. <a title=\"Request for Travel Funds\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/soci\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/115\/2023\/09\/TRAVEL_AWARD_FINAL.doc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(Download Form)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n          <\/ul>\n  \n  \n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>In addition, the Graduate School also provides several Advanced Fellowships, including Endowed PhD Fellowships, Research Enhancement Fellowships, the Final Year Fellowships, the Summer Research and Travel Grant and the PhD Achievement Award.
