I designed this\u00a0 curricula in order to enable my students to understand the link between empathy and critical thinking, problem solving, and meaningful communication.<\/p>\n<p>This project entailed three distinct phases:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Phase 1: Preparation, Research, and Experimentation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Phase 2: Action and Engagement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Phase 3: Synthesis\u00a0and the Power of Writing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the culmination of Phase 3, I asked students to send their letters to the appropriate recipients, which you can see under the &#8220;Letter Tracker&#8221; link. I launched <em>The Empathy Project<\/em> in an Advanced Writing course and intend to expand and refine it for use in different disciplinary contexts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-sub\">\n<div class=\"col-sub-section\">\n<div class=\"html-content\">\n<p><strong>Motivation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Emotional Labor of Teaching: Women&#8217;s Work Inside and Outside the Classroom,&#8221;\u00a0presented by Dr. Sims at the\u00a0<i>Pacific Ancient and Modern Languages Association<\/i> conference:<\/p>\n<p><i>Emotional competence \u2013 the ability to respond kindly, to empathize, and to manage conflicting emotional responses to an issue \u2013 is a valuable skill, a higher-level developmental skill, and a skill that we should expect of those in all avenues of leadership, particularly our teachers. The outcome of this kind of shift in pedagogy and professional attitudes will also, in time, retrain students to value emotional agility and to comprehend it as a prerequisite to entering into professional leadership and teaching contexts.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rationale:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Empathy is a method of problem solving.\u00a0 Empathy enables more effective communication, both written and verbal, and allows us to connect with diverse audiences.\u00a0 Empathy allows us to explore and use the power of emotion, coupling it with \u2013 rather than subordinating it to \u2013 logic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em>The Empathy Project<\/em> is proprietary curriculum designed by Deborah Sims.
