General description:\u00a0<\/strong>This is class is run by the participating students, under the general guidance of the faculty organizer. The bottom line: at the end of the semester, each participant gets a letter grade, while the organizer does not get any teaching credit.<\/p>\n

The objective is to give the students interested in probability and related ares of mathematics an opportunity to learn something new in a less formal environment. The basic topic of the seminar is usually decided around the first meeting of the semester; subsequent discussions can lead to a completely different direction.<\/p>\n

As a rule, the seminar meets once a week for about two (astronomical) hours. The participants are also expected to attend department’s probability and statistics seminar, usually on Fridays, 3:30-4:30pm in KAP 414, as well as other probability-related talks at the CAMS, Department, and Math Finance colloquia.<\/p>\n

The participants are encouraged to keep up-to-date on current developments in probability, statistics, and related areas by following the current postings on the\u00a0pre-print site,\u00a0<\/a>for example the\u00a0probability\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0statistics\u00a0<\/a>sections, and the papers published in journals such as (in alphabetical order)<\/p>\n
